Dr. Awkward's first appearance on-screen was in an animated segment aired on television as part of The Christmas Special in 1978, spawning some interest in the group. Kenner released the Dr. Awkward action figure not long after the special aired. This first generation of the figure became one of the most coveted comedy toys. In the toy's original design, it was possible to fire the missile on Dr. Awkward's back.
