On August 13th 2003 I was northbound on a major road in my city when I observed a vehicle headed southbound. The driver gave me a look that set off all the bells and whistles in my head... so I spun my cruiser around and followed the car. The plate came back as stolen and I radioed dispatch to inform them I had a stolen car and my direction of travel. The driver turned into a gas station and stopped. The video shows the traffic stop and then the pursuit. I caught the driver after a decent foot pursuit and the passenger (who fell to the ground and stayed in the area until police arrived because I told him to) was picked up and later released. The driver, a 14 year old boy, was charged with felony RSP and felony failure to obey a police signal as well as driving without a license. In the end I will be adding traffic charges of disregard a stop sign and failure to control. The driver could have avoided some of the charges and lowered the risk to himself if he had just stopped and obeyed my orders.
